Waipoua Forest is one of the most incredible forests I’ve ever been. We saw some huge trees, they call the trees: Kairi trees. Before we went into the forest we had to disinfect our shoes because many Kairi trees die because of infections that people bring into the forest by their shoes. So after disinfecting our shoes, we went into the forest. To me, it really looked like the jungle but Sanne (my sister) corrected me directly: No this looks definitely not a jungle. A couple of months ago she was in Peru, and went in an actual jungle. So I will just say forest. Then the moment came that we saw some huge trees and at the and of our walk we saw the second biggest Kairi tree in the forest, well you can see it in the picture.
Well if you want to visit those places if you are in New Zealand this is the adress:
6685-729 State Highway, Waipoua
And if you just drive a little further you will find the biggest Kairi tree in the forest. The age of those trees are estimated between 1000 and 2500 years, and cool to know is that ‘Kairi’ in Māori’s language has the meaning of ‘Lord of the Forest’. The oldest Kairi tree we saw is 1200 years old and approximately 40 to 50 meters high.
